Warning, exhaust fumes...
I was at shop yesterday and saw these warnings on a few wheelsets. With all the things in the world to warn against, is this really necessary? I can think of a few other warnings I’d put on wheels before this.

someone somewhere left his bike behind a car that was on and the exaust was hot so it melted the wheels so now they gotta put that silly warning on the wheels.

That used to be a common argument against trunk and trailer hitch racks, even before plastic wheels.

Wish my corima had that sign .) I managed to get a nice bump on my rear rim as it was riding behind the car for an hour or 2. They still ride fine but..

He/she who puts carbon hoops near vehicle exhaust must also be warned that coffee is ... hot.

I first saw this in the late 80's when one of our customers brought in his bike with a well cooked rear wheel.

I had a strap on a trunk mount bike rack melt cuz it was too close to an exhaust....it was a pretty low end Yakima rack.
Noticed it when on the freeway and saw the bikes moving in the rearview mirror. I pulled over, to take a look.....strap was too close to the exhaust (doh!) and melted all the way thru. Did a little MacGuyering and got back on the road. Contacted Yakima, and they sent me a new strap, and an attachment for the exhaust to redirect past the straps. This was probably about 1988 or so.....good lesson to learn on a cheap rack and cheap bikes.

That’s why I always loved the Thule Space Station.
It rode higher up and with the front wheel off No issues with heat BK

Happened to me on a long trip up the mountians with a cheapo rack. Luckily my wifes bike had Al rims, but the brand new veloflex never stood a chance

I mean, I have had veloflex just disintegrate in 100 miles just by riding on beautiful pavement so to me they never stood a chance, exaust or not.

I burned through a tire and tube that were too close to the exhaust gasses when the bike was on a Hollywood Rack behind my M3. The bike was a Gary Fisher loaner that I borrowed from my LBS for my wife-to-be to use on the Big Laguna Trail east of San Diego. I had extra tubes along but I had to boot the tire with a $20 bill so we could do the ride and we were VERY glad we didn't have to drive all the way back to town for a new tire. The shop owner thought the story was very funny and he only teased me about it for 10 years.

A few years back, I heard from someone at a shop about a carbon rim that had warped beyond repair from exhaust heat during a road trip.

Yep, seen this happen. If you have a hitch rack, worth checking that the exhaust isn't too close to the bike.

Rear racks are common. I have a friend who melted a wheel on the way home from a cross race. It definitely happens.
