I agree some threadless stems can be to fat and not match the tubing.

Anyone got some suggestions on some skinny stems in -17 degree ??
The Kalloy stem isn't bad if you have to have 31.8 bars. Super light, too.

I have tried most everything from the narrow tube Deda Superleggera to the Extralight, even hand mirror polished Al stems trying to get the finish and "look" correct and they all just don't cut it with a lugged, small tubed frame. Ugly!

Deep carbon wheels on steel frame... I wouldn't, but I see others do.

YMMV.

This.

Old-timey steel frame plus old-timey components rocks . . . at Eroica. Old-timey-steel frames and modern components (10sp Campy for me) rocks the other 364 days of the year.

They may be functional and efficient for bar changes however I say they look terrible and destroy the “look” and won't do it except to tune a fit.

Like the Sachs above, beautiful bike but that "turd log" sitting on the head tube just extinguishes the aesthetic, she ant got the "look"!
Got to agree on this. I feel like if you're going to embrace the whole neo-retro thing, than quill stems are part of the package. Otherwise threadless stems on adapters just look out of place on a small tubed racing bike from the 80s or 90s.

*unless you don’t have the original fork, then you get a pass.

Why do you need 31.8 bars? They're only that wide to make it safe to use carbon, which is rarely much lighter than alloy bars.

Can't the bike just look like they did in the '90s when then came with threadless 1" forks? Or were those bikes just made wrong?

Agree, go for it. Classic tig frame, quill stem, and modern group = perfection

I cant bring myself to use an adapter for the stem. That will stay once I have what I want figured out. The rest will be modern.
