New Urban Cycling Sneakers -- SPD possible

My lovely wife spotted these and thought they looked cool.

Designed by an ex-Adidas guy and Dave Millar...

Not cheap--asking $235/pair

Oh those are cool!

I'm kinda in the market for SPD-compatible shoes that look like sneakers. What are other options?

I found the Velo Sambas to be pretty uncomfortable. The Giros are very nice, they run kind of narrow if you have wide feet. Specialized has a sale going now on their lace-up spd shoes.

I found the velosamba to run quite small. Might want to go up a full size.

Shameless plug: my barely used size 12s are for sale.

Another vote against the velosamba, very narrow, even sizing up.
Sucks the transits only go to size 45.5

I am not into shoes with white soles. I live in a wet (and often muddy, gritty) climate, so white soles become dirty messy brown and grey toned very quickly.

I occasionally use my Ride Concepts shoes to commute in - theyre not as giant as the Five Ten SPD shoes, but theyre still a bit bulky.

The Giros look good.

What is the actual use case for casual spd compatible shoes? How are y’all using them?

I used my Adidas Velosambas fairly often when I would ride my bike around NYC on shopping trips and such. They were quite convenient for that, it was easy to walk around a grocery store or bar or whatever. Now that I live in RVA I don't use them any more.

Riding to work, casual errand rides, and a few trips where we are on/off the bike a lot.

I suppose flats would work just as well for most of this but I dont always love those (although the shimano flats with the rubber padding are great).

5.10s look pretty good, IMO. Bought a pair for casual wear. Actually not so comfy, though

I stopped riding flats in NYC after one truly terrifying experience of my foot slipping off a flat pedal in an unexpected rain shower while in traffic.

I switched to SPDs right after that, and the Velosambas were very helpful in that regard.

I'm back on flat pedals on my errand bike now though.

I really like my Specialized 2FO Roost SPDs. They look like skate shoes, so a different style from these.

The inexpensive Shimano CT5 were pretty nice too.

Both shoes fit my wide feet well.

I've been riding pedals with plastic clips for years in philly and though fiddly they work well with dress shoes too.
