ot: new for me gearhead category - EDC (every day carry) flashlights
I was cycling with a buddy and he told me a story about his son's gift wish list for his birthday. He said his son wanted a custom flashlight - WTH? I just use the 3=pack of Duracell lights from Costco but I guess there's a whole world out there for "flashlights!" Gun on the left, flashlight on the right?
Googling would suggest lots of folks knew about this before I did. And the jargon is beyond me. This is the one his son wanted: https://intl-outdoor.com/tint-rampin...switching.html

I saw the light I use on a Netflix show a few years ago and thought, gee, that sure looks handy attached by a clip to the bill of a cap. I got one shortly after with the clip plus it has a strong magnet in one end for sticking to things, storage and charging. It’s bright enough to replace a headlamp for hiking or around the camp and is excellent for home and work…it’s tiny. A perfect edc.

Everyone has their thing.. I used to do a ton of backpacking and after an encounter with what I think was a pack of raccoons that wouldnt leave us alone - my flashlight did not have a lot of throw and i could just see glowing eyes looking at us, I turned to the internet and joined candleholderforums.. this was about 20 years ago. I purchased a couple surefire flashlights and sent them to be 'modded'... I spent about $500 on the nicest one.
Here is a link to an $8,000 flashlight. https://www.coolfall.com/ptriv.html |

The D4V2 is well respected.
The LED flashlight world advances at a pretty rapid pace, driven entirely off of innovation from direct to consumer brands out of China. The legacy flashlight brands really are left in the dust on all aspects. |

Please; if you're going to go gaga over flashlights, then begin using the proper term.

Firmware updates for a flashlight?
What's next, electric shifting for bicycles? ...or maybe those shiny brakes like those on motorcycles?

I only recently learned that "tactical flashlights" are an actual thing.

Truth. You can really go down the whole "EDC" rabbit hole pretty far. Flashlights, pocket knives, multi tools, keychain gizmos: And yes, you can buy stuff from very basic and inexpensive to $$$bespoke stuff.

Go forth and indulge thyselves...
https://countycomm.com/ Currently I have this one and I love it. Perfectly simple and works great on very normal (and available) batteries. https://countycomm.com/collections/v...c7c79517&_ss=c If I were going to buy another EDC flashlight right now, it would be this one. I love the thin-ness of AAA and this one is large enough NOT to lose it easily. https://countycomm.com/collections/v...ght-by-maratac |

EDC has risks.. carry a bunch of stuff you don't need and if you get so used to carrying it that it's automatic you are prone to making donations of fancy stuff to TSA or other security forces.
I think if you really need something insanely bright the marine industry has plenty of insanely bright lights at decent costs. Super bright lights is a required tool for night time boating. That said we have a really nice machined LED flashlight.. not any fancy brand but it's definitely appreciated and it's so wonderful how long the batteries last in these modern LEDs. |

This is amusing to me - a whole world of flashlight aficionados.
I just buy the cheapie little headlamps on Amazon. They're great for working on bikes! A little extra light where you need it, without taking up a hand. I also use them when taking the trash out at night, grilling outdoors in the spring/fall when you don't have a lot of light, and of course camping. I think there's one in almost every room in our house! |

I will say, i have a thing for flashlights. Not custom or anything like that. Just good, usually mechanic-specific flashlights.
It all started with this that I bought a few years back. Worked so nicely with the magnet when i was changing the radiator on my jeep. I still love it. Then I recently got this and was quite surprised how well it worked. It is not rechargeable however. And at the same time i got a neck light, which i never thought i needed, but wow. Its like evolution saw head lamps and ran with it. |
