Do People Still Like Kool-Stop Rim Brake Pads?
Replacing my Record 11 pads. Do people still like Kool-Stop salmon? What about the dual compound? Do I need to get the 'Campi Super Record' style?
Thanks in advance. |

Salmon
I've been riding salmon for years on all my aluminum wheels, been a great brake bad. I take them off every once in a while and clean with some sandpaper and check to make sure nothing is stuck in them, they last me a good long time, brake really well and are clean on the brake track for me...

My use of them was limited to when I commuted daily and was regularly in the rain. For dry use, I use OEM pads.

I think Swiss Stop makes the best pads. I never really liked the salmon or other kool stop pads. I like the BXP compound ones from Swiss Stop, the best modulating and decently wearing pads I've used.

I did use them for many years but.......When Campy Potenza came out I was shocked how great the stock pads were.
Never had anything as quiet or functional wet or dry in my experience (On Alum rims of course) |

I have them on all of my rim brake bikes.

When you need the stopping power Salmons are great, but they do hang on to dirt and grit more than any other material I've used. I would not recommend them for an all weather bike that doesn't get frequent pad cleaning. On my powerfully braked bikes (dual pivots, Mini-Motos & Racer Ms) I've moved to either Kool Stop's dual compound road inserts or cross pads (three compound cartridge).
Considering all the love for Swiss Stop I'll likely try those when my road bike needs new inserts. |

Yes, I still drink the Kool-Stop Kool-Aid.

I do, since I run Paul brakes and that is what comes on them and what they recommend.
I figured they know a lot more than me and I haven't had any issues with them, but then again also haven't explored any other options. |

I use Kool Stops and think they're great. I like the black pads better than Salmon as they last longer and squeal less. I've had worse luck with Kool Stops on V brakes and cantis though because of pad squeal.
Kool Stops don't pick up bits of aluminum from the rim and thus don't wear the rims as much as other pads do. Last edited by MikeD; 01-27-2021 at 04:08 PM. |
