replacing walmart rear derailuer with shimano

Nephew has a Walmart mountain bike. It has a 7 cog rear cassette and a stamped steel Shimano long cage rear derailleur. After the first crash he has bent the rear derailleur and mounting tab on the frame. my brother and I spent the afternoon making it work. If I replaced it with a shimano 105 rear derailleur would it work? What came from Walmart is too flimsy. anybody done that?

Yes, a 7/8/9s shimano rear der would be fine as would any other, non 10s/11s shimano rear der.

but did you manage to align the rd hanger after bending? no RD is going to shift correctly unless you get that straight.

Agreed. Make sure it's aligned.

Truth. This is what my LBS stocks for to get lots of folks back on the road who are looking for minimal layout.

You can get a Shimano Altus 7-speed RD for less than $20 online.

10s mountain wouldn’t work but 10s Road will.

This is coming from someone who has a 10s 105 rear with alivio 9s shifters on a hybrid.

Another vote for Altus/Alivio. I have a NOS M410 here that I robbed the cable adjuster from, $18 shipped. Here's an Altus on ebay with low initial bid:

Spacing is done by the shifter, not the derailuer on 10 speed Shimano road and down. A 5700 derailuer will work. I ha e a 5700 on my kids 7 speed. It works fine.
