Running non-ust Mavic rims tubeless?
I have a hunch I already know the answer but....
I have a set of carbon Mavic Cosmic Pros that are non-UST (Mavic's tubeless standard). Anybody try and set these up tubeless with any success? Is this heinously dangerous? The only mention I can find of this on the web is this one reddit post with some strong words against trying. But I wanted a second opinion before I spend any time or money on sourcing a replacement tubeless wheelset. Thanks! |

Like many people, I have had a lot of success doing such things with mountain bikes tires due to their lower pressures and thicker carcasses.
I think the consensus is that with road the risks are too high considering the high speeds, hard pavement and higher tire pressure. I think this is a situation when most would advice caution. There still seem to be lots of folks (like me) leery of running sub35mm tires tubeless still. But that’s a debate not worth restarting here. But it nods towards the challenges of high pressure tubeless |

Weigh how much you value a few $ vs your teeth, skin, and/or appendage(s).
I use tubeless wheels with tubeless tires. And on fast descents, I’m still a bit leery. No way I’d ever consider non-tubeless anything on a road bike. |

The tubeless itself isn't where the magic is at, it's the wider rim

Hard no on trying to run tubeless on non tubeless rims especially at road tire widths. I wouldn’t give up tubeless for my mountain bike, but not even worth it for road or gravel applications either.

I figured as much. I appreciate the confirmation. Seems like I'll be sticking with tubes on road now. Thanks for saving me some $$.

As another anecdotal data point, I used to ride with a guy in Texas that ran his Mavic Cosmic Carbones (carbon fairing, aluminum rim) tubeless (they aren't) and watched him hit a big rock on the shoulder and blew the tire completely off the rim. It's not worth it. Tubeless tires on tubeless rims, put off getting dentures as long as possible.
