That said, I wouldn't mind going with CR-720's and selling them all, passing them back into the pool here.

With the current potential Poprad, 700c and 35mm; maybe 38mm with a little dimpling. Wider than that and I should probably go with a full-custom frame from the ground up. And I'd probably size down to 650b for that (future) one.

If I were a reasonable man, I'd hold off on buying this Poprad and just wait to commission a custom in a year or two. But, eh, that's not really what this forum is about...

Hehe… tinkering is teh fun!

IME, a 35 or 38 will clear with Mini-Motos / Mini-V, but leaves very little room for fenders, and / or you need to be spot-on with the boss placement (high, with pads at bottom of slot in the caliper).

I’ve run like 5 different brakes on the same bike, and full V with the right levers gave me the best combo of tire and fender clearance for 42 mm tires, and braking power. But the wide stance 720 were easiest to set up and worked with all kinds of levers. Shimano CX-50/70 are also great. The old Shimano XT / XTR cantis are my favorite, though more of a pain to set up, principally because my nicest bikes have narrow stud spacing.

That looks like a totally cool bike - have you posted more photos here somewhere?
Wanna say more about the choice of each brake front and rear?

Don't worry, I moved the fender tab behind the fork crown shortly after the photos were taken.

I should perhaps do a thread on that bike, it’s had a long and diverse life.
It originally had drop bars and full-size V brakes. As I explored turning it into a flat-bar bike I realised I wanted to retain the ability to switch back and forth between both types of handlebar, and cantis seemed to offer a flexibility that Vs could not (in addition to having more clearance for snowy commutes). I, like others, went through the ‘let’s try Cantis on this’ thing, had horrible brake shudder up front and promptly bought a Mini-Moto. I knew to put a low-profile touring canti out back for heel clearance.

Thumbs down

I have used all of the big tire brake options. Biggest stopping power goes to mini-vs (or regular V's) with travel agents. As good as disc brakes. But not the prettiest.

I wanted to like minimotos. I did not. I found the tension adjustment finicky, a solution in search of a problem. Also, on standard canti posts (not the special Paul version), they did not clear 38s on my CAADX. I suspect that was a one-frame problem, not a design flaw, but I sold them soon after I bought.

After replacing cables and housing and lubing pivots, I am shocked at how good the mediocre weinmann centerpulls on my winter commuter are. Shocked enough to be considering using centerpulls for my next gravel build - easy to set up, super low maintenance.

Bottom of the big tire brake list is cantilevers. They work. The best I've had are shimano cx70, but I replaced those with mini-vs and never looked back (trp 8.4).

It's good that the Paceline finally has an appropriate tagline. Thank you!

Well sometimes I do...but alas I ride closer to a 54

My current Bishop has been in the garage longer than any bike in a long time, so that doesn't bode well for any cast-offs! Chris' work is tops.

Hey all, instead of starting a new thread, though I might ask my question here as it seems appropriate...

Looking to maximize tire size on my new to me Cielo Sportif Racer and deciding what brakes to run. Hoping to build it up with Campy 11 or 10sp..

My question is would it help/can I go with mid-reach brakes such as TRP or VO, here is a pic of an older set of Force brakes mounted over Clement LGG 28mm on Ksyrium rims...

If the Force brakes reach your rims correctly, mid reach brakes won't work.
