Doing it in the rain would make it even stupider…your chance for stupid glory.

image.jpeg This thread had been percolating in my subconscious for a while. Back in the day I would ride to and from races whenever they were within 25-30km of home. After several DNSs this season due to work and weather I finally got my act together this morning and rode 41km to the start of the local Masters CC handicap road race of 47km. Needless to say, I was dropped early, the price of too little racing in recent months. Faced with a 60km ride home including a detour for my customary Tank Juice post-race, I realised in a convergence of opportunity and atonement another 50km on top of that would make 200km for the day. Not especially stupid by the standards around here, but not something I had achieved for a while. Anyway, in spite of two Tanks, the 27 degrees Celsius heat and my inability to add 41, 47 and 105km after eight hours' riding meant I ended up with 197km for the day. I'll take that as 98.5% of target and leaving 200 on the table for the few months before the days shorten again... All up just over 197km with 1450 vertical metres in a little over eight hours. I was thinking same thing, but in Boston where the drivers are completely irrational and unpredictable.

I still haven't done the initial one I mapped out - waiting to have the right bike/weather - maybe that is not in keeping the spirit but so it goes.. soon, I think. |

I did the Run Every Street thing during the first COVID lockdowns while on sabbatical in Australia. It was pretty fun to try and fill the city map on Strava. I have also thought about doing the same thing here at home on the bike. That would be stupid.

I have no sequential memory and thus no sense of direction or ability to navigate. Just leaving my house on my bike is stupid. Just to give you an idea of how bad it is, in 2018 the Boston Police escorted 6 cyclists off the Mass Pike, I was 4 of them. I also had a commute from East Boston to Belmont for a year. East Boston is across the harbor from Boston (it's mostly an airport), it's connected tunnels and the Tobin bridge (I've ridden both), or you can take the tour de ugly. I've convinced a few people to take the tour de ugly with me (it's on the way to a lovely sewage treatment plant), but they all refuse to do it a second time. I also have no sense of danger. Other people think that riding in Boston is dangerous, I don't notice that any more...
I keep looking at BBDave's thread about being a tour guide and thinking that I have a unique way of seeing the world (it's called lost).
