Shoelace Management

In the spirit of giving back to the forum, a tip on managing shoelaces. When my compression socks get stretched out and need replacing, I cut the section between the toe and heel and use it on my cycling shoes with laces.

Interesting idea. All my lace up cycling shoes (usually Giro) have a little lace keeper built in so I haven't needed this. However, on some shoes it could be useful.

I haven’t had lace up cycling shoes in a long time.

For flat pedal riding I find a lot of shoes have ridiculously long laces which is most of the problem. I have some New Balance 574s right now and it’s really noticeable the laces are sensibly sized and I don’t need to worry about them at all.

It’s probably worth looking at replacing laces with shorter ones so you don’t have to worry when riding.

Or you can shorten the laces.

A while back I bought some "double-walled" heat-shrink tubing to replace the aglets, but haven't gotten around to actually doing it.

(Double-walled means that there's an interior layer of that when heated acts like an adhesive, which makes it more likely that the shrunk tubing will stay in place. It's primary purpose to help keep water out of electrical connections, but in this case that isn't relevant.)

A while back, the big bad S ‘specialized” offered a similar product with their lace up road shoe, I think the sub6 model. Theirs was for aero purposes, although it works also to keep laces out of the way

I don’t know how anyone can wear cycling shoes with laces - especially with todays boa enclosures.

I don't know.. with today's shoes and how they are made, I would call that bodge (vs hack).. don't most modern lace shoes have a "keeper"?

edit- but if it works for you, that's all that matters!

Funny… I was wondering how anyone can wear shoes with those d*mn boas instead of the more user friendly laces (or even velcro, if it stays sticky).

Nowadays most decent lace up cycling shoes have a well-placed elastic lace holder, IME.

I'm tempted to get a pair of lace shoes, just to try them.. I have zero desire to ever have another pair of velcro shoes though.. Boa shoes are great to wear, esp if the Boa dial can micro-adjust back and forth (usually an upper-end shoe have these)

Thanks for the tip. I don’t wear lace shoes often when riding but I agree many laces are very long and can be problematic. I think a shorter lace may be the answer, though.

I offset the bow tie to the outside of the shoe and double bunny ears if the laces are long.
