Worthy of discussion? LA-7 and Ullrich

Quote:
In an email conversation with CyclingTips, Lance Armstrong described former Tour de France rival Jan Ullrich as “an important person in my life,” and wrote that he would do “anything in my power” to help the German through his recent legal and substance issues.
Ironic comment, if true

“Lance Armstrong is very interested in the fate of Jan, has kept up to date and says that the cycling community has to stick together,” Hoppe said

I read this as Lance making this all about how he's been wronged by cycling's governing bodies. As he usually does. Others have said he's becoming more contrite, more humble, etc. I am far less inclined to be charitable to Lance. Not to mention he's still a millionaire, isn't he?

Ulrich's problems are not to be dismissed, but Ulrich seemed to have recovered enough from the Puerto fallout, and he did mention that his wife left him and he couldn't see his kids. That's a concrete reason why I think it's utterly narcissistic of Lance to go where he did.

Reasonable people may disagree. I can't see inside Lance's head to know what he's thinking ... but neither can anyone else.

If you want to help Jan, help Jan. Interviews with CyclingTips about how's you're helping Jan does not help Jan.

Lance is awful.

I'm pretty ambivalent on the whole LA thing. Yeah, he was (and may still be, I don't know the guy) a jackhole. ...but... coloring everything the guy does with your emotions/expectations/whatever isn't healthy and only makes you mad. Doesn't affect ole LA one bit.

when lemond got shot fignon was the only rider in the pro peloton who sent him a message of condolence....
he didnt do go around bragging about it to the press afterwards.

Smoking

Euros and drug addicts tend not to share our aversion to smoking.

Having listened to the TdF podcasts before all of this Jan Ulrich stuff broke, Lance unprompted (the topic was around rivals or memorable stages or some such) spoke very warmly about how he and Jan had become close, how Jan was instrumental in his career and genuine admiration.

It's possible that people, even those whose general being you dislike, are capable of empathy or compassion.
