Tire help: Need 700x36 tan/cream wall like Challenge Grifo
Did a bunch of trail/gravel riding in Duluth in October and found that my 700x36 rear Challenge Gravel Grinder would spin during out of the saddle climbing. I need a rear with a bit more bite but the Grifo only comes in 33 & 38. 33s are too small to run with inserts and the 38s wouldn't give enough clearance. The 36 Gravel Grinders measure 37 on my rims. Any suggestions? I'd like to stay with tan/cream walls to match the front Grinder if possible.

Tufo Gravel Thundero or Swampero - I've used the Speedero as an all road tire but probably too slick based on your experience with the gg.

This is actually an interesting idea to me. Are people running a slicker tire up front and a knobbier one in the rear to help with the traction on climbs? I might want to try this.

Personally, I can’t believe any of these are still available… and there are a couple of possibilities here.

If you can squeeze it in, the 700x40 terra speeds measure a little undersized on a 20mm ID rim and they're fantastic

If the grifo tread would work, the FMB slalom is more or less the same, and available in a marginally larger (34.5mm) casing.

I'll have a set of lightly used 35mm Terra Speeds available soon.

Also, Challenge Getaway is available in 36mm, might be a grippier tread than the gravel grinder. |

Challenge Getaway is a 36 mm with some but not deep tread. I used them on an Oregon tour with some pretty thick gravel (North Trask and C2C); pleased with the performance.
