Well they did upgrade by producing radios where just the face plate came off. Progress.

MacGruber still rocks a pull-out Blaupunkt in his Miata!

I had a Nakamichi single DIN six cd changer. Still have no idea how it worked internally but it was the skippiest piece of junk ever.

I my '81 Mustang I had a Blaupunkt with a hand held-sized controller that clipped into a flexible stalk. It was removable, leaving people wondering where the radio was, and what that stalk was for. I used a piece of woodgrain paneling to fill the hole where the factory radio was.
Why? Because the aftermarket radio I had in the dash was stolen while parked on the green in New Haven CT. Bizarre story: After I discovered the opera window broken and the stereo missing, I somehow contacted the police to file a report; I think I actually flagged down an officer on patrol. While taking down my information, he kept saying, "I'm doing you a real favor." It took me a while to figure out he was probably looking for a payoff, which he didn't get.

I had a friend who, back in the day, had a pull out radio he was super proud of and it took it out and carried around with him whenever he parked the car in public.
One day he parked at the mall and took the radio out and went shopping inside. When he came out the car was gone. I don't think he ever saw it again. I wonder if he still has the radio? dave |

Had a removable Alpine around ‘90 or so that I was proud of.
Being in a quiet, woodsy neighborhood we never locked our car or house doors….until that one night. My Alpine was stolen amongst alot of other stuff, but at least they didn’t trash my dashboard like the other vehicles in the driveway. So there is that. |

I still have a couple of nice Sonys with removable faceplates. I'm not using them but I wouldn't hesitate to in the right vehicle.
When I was a kid we had a Craig 8-track/FM radio that mounted under the dash. It was mounted on a metal quick-release bracket so all of our vehicles had one and the stereo was moved to whichever vehicle we were using that day. It was this model. The clear plastic window is for the FM dial (some cars back then only had an AM radio).

I had a Denon pull out I really liked.....had an ADS amp under the driver's seat, Boston Acoustic speakers and a Denon 10 disc CD changer in my old Bronco II. I built a locking box for the changer since it was in the cargo area...covered it in matching carpet...turned out pretty nice.
I miss that old truck & stereo......

I had a man break into my Ford Granada (I know, I know) and yank out my aftermarket Blaupunkt. The police caught him as he was leaving my condo's garage. At trial, his attorney asked me, on the stand, "Didn't you give Mr. XXXX (I don't remember his name) permission to remove your radio?" I laughed, said something like, "Are you kidding me?" and was admonished by the judge. The guy was found guilty nonetheless.
