Rediscovering the American West - Adventures in Oregon

I wrote a piece for Soigneur, the Dutch cycling magazine, that went live today. Link here.

There's so much good riding in Oregon - this piece only covers a small slice of it. Every time I ride down there I think about moving south from Seattle... but we have it pretty good here too.

Interesting read. Oregon is home to one of my favorite rides of all time: Crater Lake Rim and one of my least favorites: Mt. Hood. You evidently did the latter one. We tackled Mt. Hood from Hood River in the middle of Summer.

Big mistake. Hot, long, and boring.

There are definitely some terrible roads in Oregon. The key is to make the most of the good ones. The riding around Hood River is excellent.

Also - based on your username, I'm guessing you're a twin dad? I am also. Ours are ~ 6 months old. Lots of fun, but tough to find time for writing. And riding. And also sleeping.

Yeah. I'm a twin Dad. By the time I thought of the tag "Fignon's Barber" it was taken

The sleep gets easier. I prioritized the riding because it really helped with my mental state, including the writing. At first, it can be totally exhausting. Riding a century was much less taxing than the first few years of chasing my girls around for a few hours. But it gets easier and much more rewarding....

There is a Strava segment in Oregon named Lionel's Skid Marks. Its near Grants Pass.

I'm doing the first part of this ride solo in a couple of weeks, going from Portland to Timothy Lake to meet up with a friend. I'm looking forward to spending so much time on no traffic roads. I've been a road rider in Portland for about 10 years but am more and more attracted to finding gravel and dirt. There's a lot out around here.

Crater Lake is definitely a top 10 lifetime ride if you hit it on a sunny day during shoulder season.
