I had a removable face stereo in my 86 Accord LX. Overall it was a kickass system.

These days, I drive an F250 XLT work truck (cloth bench, with satellite radio), and my phone via Android is my deluxe entertainment system. So I guess we've run full circle because I take it with me when I get out.

Dad had a Quattro with an Alpine stereo, but my dream was a 911 with a Blaupunkt.

Radios

I have a 1978 911 with a Blaupunkt. I've never turned it on. That flat 6 is the only noise I need!

This many years later, it still bugs me that Annie chose that boy.

The struggle was real...

Had an Alpine pullout deck similar to this one back in the mid 80's but recall paying much more than $85

Growing up as I did in South Africa, pull-out radios were actually handy, because people would - routinely - break your car window and pull out your radio (and anything else they could).

This thread brings back some good memories of my Alpine (pull out) radio. To quote a famous 80s movie, it was "so choice."

Memories

I walked into my friends apartment on the upper side of Manhattan in the late 80's, on his coffee table was perched his Blaupunkt removable radio face plate with a sign that read "No Car".

His beautiful MG was stolen the day before.

Back in the late 70s, my dad parked his 78 Chevy Malibu (POS car, but that's a different story) which he purchased brand new, in a large, multi-car, private parking lot with roll down metal doors. He rented his stall on a monthly basis.

It was in a "nice" neighborhood in San Francisco. One day, I went in to use the car, and discovered the entire dash (it was plastic) from the radio slot down was literally cut out. So they trashed the whole dash of the car just to get to the factory, crappy radio/cassette unit. It was shocking to find it that way, and also puzzling as to why anyone would do that.

Maybe the thieves just wanted to practice in the enclosed safety of that garage.

This serves to remind me the muriad of times my good friend ran back into tha bar to fetch his stash/pile he forgot on the bar, again...

A pile of phone, keys and benzi/blaupunkt. And occasionally a beeper before he gave phone # out regularly when cell call$ added up fast.

Amongst the plethora of useless trivia that clutters my brain is the name of the company that pioneered the retrofittable remove-your-car-radio enclosure:

Bensi Box
