The Cycling Independent

https://cyclingindependent.com/the-c...t-a-manifesto/
The time has come for something new, something with a broader mission, something that aims to speak to any cyclist out there, to welcome all who like to pedal. That’s why The Cycling Independent.

It’s my belief that cyclists are ready for a media outlet that accepts no advertising and is thus free of commercial influence. Mistrust of large institutions (including publishing companies, or maybe especially publishing companies) is a common theme. Our desire is to present you, dear reader, with a site free of affiliate sales, paid placements and the rest, to treat you with the respect that I have always believed you deserve. Hopefully, you’ll want to do the same for us.

Subscriptions are entirely voluntary. There is no paywall. Subscribers will accrue benefits like some premium content available only to them, and access to other bonuses as we dream them up.
Between this and my ongoing allegiance to CyclingTips, seems I'll have plenty of reading to keep me busy for the foreseeable future.

Wishing Padraig and his newly-assembled gang all the best with this adventure.

Any media gig can have ads and not to pander to business in their editorial. Mistrust of advertizing goes along w/ every other mistrust around and it´s basically a paranoid state of mind.
Having said that i hope there is good writting there.
Just don´t try to convince us lack of commerce brings more "truth" or happyness to our lives.

Thanks for sharing--this looks interesting and clear writing is always a pleasure.

Padraig had me at Skateboarder Magazine, and I agree that at least parts of Northampton are heavenly.

I've always enjoyed his writing. The one with the lede where the psychiatrist asked him about his spiritual practices is a real classic.

There's truth here, though. Come to think of it, if there was a "Paceline Magazine," Clean and Colker would be the two of the authors I'd read. And Wernerherzogsid, of course.

That'd mean I'd have to think before I post..

But I would enjoy taking the time to write some longer navel-gazing posts, or pulling together an actual story or three out of the hundred or so experiments I've had on different bikes. There is quite a bit of grist for the milling at this point.

Tinker with the lede and pitch it to a cycling mag. The crux of the story is in the last paragraph. It would be a great “general interest” piece that a lot of cyclists could relate to.

Of course nothing is truly free - including "free" journalism. In exchange for viewing content, you are giving away personal information, which is being used to subject you to targeted marketing. It would be bad enough if that targeted marketing was simply for commercial products. But more and more, the targeted marketing is political propaganda. Sadly, many don't really understand the cost of "free" internet content. And in some ways, the world is a worse place for it.

I took their model as being donation based - if you value them and want to support them, leave a tip (one-time, or recurring).

I would of course prefer that there were higher marginal tax rates on the highest earners [sic] in our society and that the artists and journalists that enrich lives were fully supported for the betterment of all - noblesse oblige and all that - but unless the pendulum swings far in the other direction, the best we can probably hope for is that those with a modicum of disposable income choose to support things that matter such that the creators of content can be sustained in their pursuits. A society where everything is transactional and for-profit is a sad sad place to live, as I think we are slowly finding out.

You could write the story of "the need to ride a Dogma..." thread which would end withe the pro closet deal thread, a 1000 page novel written as a flow of consciousness beat style. It could be a major literary breakthrough.

Along this line, I've been wondering if there will be a sudden surplus of used Dogmas after the Tour, once the winning streak is over, which I believe stands at 8 of the last 9 TdFs. Who knows? Maybe I'll own a carbon frame after all.
