What is the purpose of the 1.0 mm steel spacer that goes on the freehub before the cassette?

I found a spacer on a HB-00RE with a CS-8S. There is an unused spacer in a CS-8S box I had; no mention of the spacer on the instruction sheet found inside. I don't recall using the spacers before. They seem to move the cassette a little too far outboard.

For using 7 cogs perhaps? Would make sense if the spacer came with the hub.

1993 is the earliest detailed parts catalog that I have. The Record hub is model FH-00 RE. There is no spacer shown on the hub page. There is a spacer shown behind the large cog on the Record cassette page. Part number is 1134097 but no description or application information is provided. In my experience, there is no spacer used behind a C8 cassette.

On some bikes, the derailleur cage would touch the spoke in low gear. Just barely. That spacer was used to make sure it wouldn't happen. Not all wheels had the problem.

Thanks, makes sense. The spacer pushes the last cog out close to the edge of the cassette body and there's still a lot of room to the axle end.

So, is there a subtle difference in dimensions between this hub to the later HB-20RE?

And typically, it happened on bikes with close range cassettes. The last cog would be a 19 or 21 tooth. It was less likely with a 23 or 25 tooth cog.
