Tubular size and rim width

I can’t seem to find a clear answer to this question about sizing and compatibility for tubular. I am interested in mounting 30mm road tires to tubular wheels but I’m unsure about what’s the min width of the rim to be compatible and safe. I don’t see many wide tubular disc rim. I’m eyeballing a 23mm wide tubular wheel set (disc). Is 23mm wide ok? I mean cross folks used 33s on narrower rims in the past, right?

I have some 30mm Vittoria tubs glued to an old set of Campag Nucleons (inner width 14.5mm outer width 21mm) and that’s about as wide of a tire that I’d mount on an old, narrow rim, as the base tape is a bit wider than the gluing surface. A 23mm wide rim should be good but perhaps check the tire manufacturer’s website if you feel uncomfortable.

exactly right.

Back in the days before "gravel" was a thing, we all used to ride cx tires on road rims for gravelling. I would not worry about your combo in the least.

Considering for forever 33 CX were put on narrow rims and run @ low pressures, some data to consider.

Too narrow a tire on wider rim i can see as an issue if you flat. Especially carbon rims that might get damaged. imo

If you're in the market for new wheels, Shimano still makes tubular rimmed wheels and the width is more modern.

The R9270 wheels feature a tubular rim with an external width of 28mm, in three different rim heights - 35mm, 50mm and 60mm.
