What frame is this?? Bugno?!

I have a buddy looking to sell his steel roadie and I tried looking up if there was any info on this frame but came up with nothing. Anyone have any insight?

What ever it is... the tubeset is not considered high end.

Thron isn’t top level tubing from that time period (early to mid 90’s) but it’s not low end either and there are plenty of nice bikes around with Thron. The tubeset and paint pattern remind me of a nice De Bernardi that passed though my hands once.

Gianni Bugno license his name out for some contract frames? Would be a good way to turn a buck at the height of his powers in the early 90s.

Corroded, hammered and dirty. Possibly rusting inside judging from cable guide. Not worth much no matter what it is.

Where did you see corrorion? I see dirt only. Very easy to check if there is any corrosion.
Thron is a slightly heavier but tough tubeset. Most important is how it´s built and geometry. WE are too hung up on tubing and end up judging poorly.

I'd vote the same -- probably Billato-built, with Gianni Bugno private-labeling their frames.

Italian for sure, the paint looks a lot like my paletti, actually are the same colors (different theme tho) but would not surprise me if the same guy painted it.

Same with the the chrome job.

Seen a couple of bugno labeled frames at ebay but never looked for any information because well could be that there's a bugno (not necessarily linked to the rider) bike shop somewhere and that frame comes from it, who knows.

wow first i had ever heard of a Bugno frame..not suprising though,but funny i'd never heard of or seen one that is what i imagine likely a 25 year old frame.
looking at the lug details i would bet its not a Billato frame but some other well known Italian shop that did contract work,i know i've seen that work somewhere else. i do have a Billato Lemond and dont recall ever seeing most of those details on a Billato frame.

I was involved in the import of hundreds of De Bernardis into New Zealand in the mid/late 1980s, and visited the factory once or twice.

From memory, which fades, the rudimentary seat stay to seat lug attachment of this Bugno-branded frame is all but identical to that of De Bernardi.

De Bernardi also offered very similar masked fade paint finishes.

De Bernardi offered frames at a much lower price, tubing, finish and paint level than more well-known builders of the day, although they were also capable of producing higher-end models near as good as them. You got what you paid for.

Looking across the whole picture I'd bet it's a De Bernardi under the Bugno name.

One would be hard pressed to find any italian Pro between 1965 and today wo has won anything of significance and never had his name slapped on some kind of bike frame
