the wisdom of grant petersen...
OK, may not have tremendous business acumen, but...
Foresight. Yep. Romulus from the mid-00's. Fits Rene Herse/Compass Barlow Pass 38's with room to spare. They can even be pushed through those (lovely and powerful) stock longer reach Shimano calipers without deflation.

Great, great bike. I've liked every Rivendell I've ridden. Grant is a huge influence on what has become the norm, glad to see it!

Looks great! Those truly are some fatties on there. How does it ride? Do you think you could fit 35s with fenders?

Yes, it looks like 35's would work with fenders. These tires are a true 38 mm on A23 rims, and there's actually a bit of fender room... would have to run them very close to the tires, though.

He was right about big tires and chill rides, but off on how people wanted it to look. Either way, hats off to him.

Oooh.. I've sorta coveted a Romulus for awhile. Now it's basically the in thing.
Lovely bike. What bar tape is that? Last edited by roguedog; 08-15-2020 at 02:28 PM. |

Maybe not. T-shirts seem to have overtaken jerseys even if the frames are crabon fibre...for now.

I still have one of the original Rambouillet bikes in candy orange and creme. The Romulus was the same frame with simpler lugs and a couple of heat-treated tubes replaced by regular chrome-moly.
I bought the last prototype Romulus to be built before they went into regular production as a surprise present for Leslie. When we visited Riv. HQ to order a custom for me she rode this prototype that was being used as a demo. a few months later Grant posted that much as he'd like to keep it for "the museum" they did not have room so it was for sale. He got a lot of "orders" but mine was first. A few years ago Les gave up riding so I sold it to someone on this forum. The only road bike I still have is my Rambo with all its original 3x9 Ultegra Flite-Deck, Shimano Standard or Mid-reach calipers,Open Pros, Nitto Technomic/Noodle bars. Grant designed these bikes with 132.5 MM rear spacing to allow 130 and 135 rear axles. I bought some Wide rims on XT hubs to use with fat tires but before I ever used them I bought a Riv Allrounder that already had fat rims on 135 hubs so these wheels are still virgins. |

Nice. That was back when Riv’s made sense. I’m not a fan of the new crop of frames.
Went on a nice ride on my Riv today. |
