I suppose I should relate a personal story as a PSA.

Several years ago I was in the local liquor store and saw something that was described as a double IPA. Well, I like IPA, so why not double down? Makes sense, right? Being somewhat frugal, I always buy cases since that's more cost efficient than buying by the six pack.

I took the case home, stuck it in the fridge in the megashed (1500 sf).

A weekend or two later I was working out there and cracked one open. Tasty. Strong. Good.

Went about working outside in the vegetable garden, various projects in the shed, mowing the grass, etc.

Not long after drinking two beers, 12oz each, I thought, "Hey, I feel kinda drunk."

Pretty soon I decided, "Yeah, I'm kinda drunk, and I've still got a lot of work to do."

I checked the label. It was over 12% ABV. Apparently double hops means double alcohol. Eventually I gave away 3 six packs and finished one myself.

Moral of the story - read the label before buying, and especially before drinking.

12% is barelywine territory, and not even a triple IPA. I actually stopped drinking double IPAs at home (mostly) cuz it's too easy to crack a second or even third 16oz can and have a sluggish morning. That said, my current fav in NYC is KCBC's Superhero Sidekick DIPA. Haven't been too impressed with Other Half lately but maybe I'm burned out after 5 years of it. But I can't wait for their collabs to restart.

Yes beware. ABV > 8% is a recipe for staggering. That’s why RRB limits the Younger to three per person. Believe me you really shouldn’t drink more than that

The President is a bit more citrus. Not fruity. Must be the hop used?

Refreshing carbonated wine. I am really enjoying for the summer and I don't drink much.

Ipa

Washed 2 cars, rode for 2 hours, went for a swim, cleaned/washed 3 bikes. Now it’s time, good to have choices.

I love a good IPA but on a really hot day I find something less hoppy more refreshing. Yesterday, after 95 miles and 7k in unusually humid 86 degree SoCal weather, this was perfection:

Not sure I really agree with Strong IPAs/DIPAs and hot weather.

If I'm dehydrated at all they just destroy me with the high ABV and lots of hops.

And if you're a skinny cyclist who got that way by not drinking much and riding a lot your tolerance is super low.

Last weekend I had a Heady Topper and it just completely wrecked me.. upset stomach, felt really drunk, up all night, and felt like I had a hangover the next day.

Maybe something was bad with it.. 3rd one in a 4-pack and the first 2 didn't do that to me nearly as bad, but it's the highest ABV and highest IBU beer I've had in recent months and it's starting to seem like too much for hot weather.

Heady topper is pretty heavy. Maybe go for a focal banger next time. Or if we must IPA a session IPA but I’m more of a pale/helles/lager guy for summer.

Ending the day with some Very Gggreennn
