Identification: Campagnolo Triple Crankset (Corce d Aune, Record Look ?!)
Hi again,
I bought a fantastic 90s Somec Columbus MAX frame and it had a really strange Campagnolo triple crankset on it. Can't find any information about it on Velobase or elsewhere on the internet. However I seem not to be the only one confused by this crankset. Saw it on some website for sale, and the seller also didn't really know what he had on hand there. Maybe someone here can shed light onto this mystery :-) Thanks again in advance |

That is first generation Athena, also available with 28 and 30 small rings, 39-43 middle rings, and 50-53 big rings. I'd be interested in it if you plan to sell it. I might have a double from the same era.

The through bolts on the spider arms look like homebrew. How is the small ring spaced away from the inside of the spider?

It looks sort of home made to me as well. You can see that it has spacers for the granny but that doesn't really mean anything, Campy MTB cranks had them rather than cast in spacers.

Pretty sure it was done on the same casting as the double, so the only way to get enough threads was to drill and tap clear through the arms. Catalog is dated 1/91.

You're going to need a left-handed puller when it comes time to remove those cranks. You've got 15 mm hex bolts there which is probably a good thing.

i have a few campagnolo triple sets (no Athena), none had these through-holes, but i've seen pictures of after-market modifications of various crankset types that did.
This is what a factory triple of roughly that era looked like: its a Veloce not an Athena but there was a lot of trickling-down through the group hierarchy in these years - making dies for Aluminum forging is expensive. My Victory/Triomphe triple *does* have spacers for the third chainring, but these sit on cast sockets on the crank. bottom line, my money is on aftermarket/homemeade

It’s Athena. Oliver1850 knows his stuff and has it right. Even provided the image from the correct Campag catalog. See image below.

Athera didn't have the extractors so any crank puller will work and yup, Athena.

Yup, that' a shimano BB I'll bet. Too bad as the crank 'flats' are now JIS-ish and no mas Campagnolo/ISO tapers...

WOW. so much information in such a little time. this forum (you guys) are amazing!
i would indeed like to sell the crankset. how much do you think something like this is worth? i was also wondering about the BB, didn't seem campagnolo to me. overall the somec had a weird combination of parts. and was used as a touring bike with a luggage rack mounted to the rear and a straight steerer. |

It looked to me like it was used with the wrong BB. Looked like a JIS taper Shimano in there. Believe Campagnolo had gone to the ISO taper by then. But OP will know.
