Best classic looking “modern” rims?
I have a set of silver Record hubs looking for some rims. I love my HED Belgium+ wheels but their looks won’t work on this build. What are my best choices for a gray or non high-polished silver rims are on the market in wide options? I know about H Plus Son, anything else? I need 32 hole.

Pacenti brevet rims are pretty nice
Really though for the classic box look TB14’s can’t be beat.

TB14s for the win. Though I think the high-polished silver looks perfect.

If "modern" means tubeless compatible I dont think the TB-14 cut it. Not sure, event though I have a set. Does "modern" also mean i20? What does "modern" mean? I'd say i20, TC.
What does "classic looking" mean? I'd say box, eyelets, and not black. Probably polished. Ano would be like classic modern; that is, what was considered modern in the old days. To me polished on any rim looks pretty modern classic (though not classic modern). I give you Velocity Quill polished for consideration. But may be too modern looking for you to consider as "classic looking". Last edited by marciero; 01-12-2020 at 04:26 PM. |

Thanks all. By tubeless I mean wide more than tubeless. I like and have used the TB 14s. More than anything I was curious if there were other options that I simply did not know about. These will go on a 90s Serotta CRL w/ silver Campy Athena 11 speed.

Another thought, depending on your timing and budget.
i just got a Velocity Quill in to rebuild a front wheel, and it's a very nice rim, and one of the most modern Velocity offerings in the rim brake department. i just checked on the web, and they will custom anodize them. having a set of these with grey hard ano would be awesome! Quote:

Easton R90 comes in 32 hole. The EASTON stickers are super easy to peal off.
EDIT: nevermind. read your first post a little too fast, thought you were looking for something that was not silver. The TB-14s looks like a solid option. Last edited by Morgul Bismark; 01-12-2020 at 04:53 PM. |

This. Gray ano would be awesome. It would look like the modern clincher that Mavic or Ambrosio SHOULD have made.

I like the Easton R90 SL's, although they kind of flying under the radar.

i would say Velocity has had a few quality issues in the past, but largely speaking, they are great rims, and the manufacturing issues they had are long past. the Quill represents a new, well engineered rim. i would not hesitate to build with a set of these.

Have you heard of cycloretro? They're in Australia, but Chris Howard, the owner/operator could sell you a set of mavic open pro's. However, his rims will be the color of classic open 4 cd rims with matching decals. Only you would know what they really are. I'm guessing this suggestion may not be the fastest solution, but visually, they're very convincing rims. You could Google Cycloretro, and go to the wheel build section to see for yourself. I hope this might help, but however you solve this, how about a post when it's finished.
