To me, the clear cut sign that someone needs to hang it up, is when they lose race sharpness. Lance, Contador and now Cav. They lose the situational awareness that made them so great, and it feels like Cav is at that point. Contador was in the same boat, as was Lance. Just going down on stupid trivial things. I guess that's the equivalent of Father time in the NBA catching up to guys.
Yes. Missed it as I am too used to the Sagan complainers on this forum.

Agree. No disrespect to Cavendish, but you have to wonder with the number of times he's hitting the deck. It appears to me that he's fixing to join that club of pro racers that just can't seem to keep the rubber side down, like you mentioned -7, Pistolero, and there's also Van de Velde plus a few others whose names escape me at the moment. Not all have been his fault, granted, but like you say it's that situational awareness thing.
No one likes to hang it up, but he's made a ton of bank over his career, probably got some nice endorsements plus his own line of bike stuff going - and most important - has a nice family at home.

I can't believe they don't protect/isolate those bollards better. Crazy.

What a great win by Nibali and a very nice telephone call too.

Bravo.

Not quite the photofinish from last year but an exciting race. Kudos to Nibali and good to know Cavendish isn't seriously hurt, that crash looked quite bad. Does Nibali get enough respect? How many pro riders are there nowadays who win both tours and classics?

I found this waaay more exciting than the finish last year.

Wish Nibbles had a GoPro on his bars for that descent tho...

Loved the race. Nibali won on brains. As I get older, I come to appreciate that type of victory more. And Nibali constantly bumping elbows, shoulders, heads for the 20km preceding his attack in order to hold position. Excellent.

No he didn't. But he also didn't seem super motivated by the looks of it to chase down a friend and old teammate. He was busy keeping an eye on Kwaikowksi, trying to stay in position if they made the catch.

Nibali was a bit of a sleeper and played his hand well. Was glad to see him make it stick.
