OT: Winter outwear

I’m facing another winter in MI this year. Last year was the first I had been here for decades, and it was milder than it has been in decades. I don’t foresee this happening this year.

My trusty 30-year-old Carhartt jacket is getting pretty thin beer around the cuffs and collars, so I’m looking for a new jacket. I’m not looking for subzero jacket, but something that’ll keep an old man who gets cold when it’s 50° out Through what might be a colder than normal winter here.

Is Carhartt still the best bang for the buck? Does anyone have anything else to recommend? Mostly used for dog walking and snow shoveling.

I’m not looking for a fancy technical jacket. Just something that wears well and will keep me somewhat warm. The Carhartt served me well for 30 years..

Johnson Woolen Mills makes nice jackets here in Vermont. Don’t let the patterns fool you; most of them are available in single colors as well and look pretty nice for the use you describe in a dark blue or grey.

Mine is Made in USA heavy weight 100% wool, trim fit. Very versatile, never stinks, rarely needs to be washed:

I've spent many single digit mornings up a utility pole. Carhartt gets the job done. Thankfully I now have a lifetime supply.

If you're not going to be working in them, you might need to run them through a few wash cycles. Maybe run them over a few times. They're awfully stiff to start out.

To be clear, I'm looking for a version of what I have, but maybe a bit warmer. I think the insulation has gotten better over the last 30 years.

I just got back from a dog walk in the dark at 40* with this jacket. Is there a model Carhartt I should be looking at?

When I bought this 30 years ago, it was at the hardware store on my UPS route.

I know it looks good in the picture, but the cuffs are shot, and it's embarrassing when I see my rich friends

Yes, that is my old UPS watch cap in the pocket. I retired over 20 years ago. I think I still have one in storage along with Campy 10s.

I'd just like a similar utilitarian jacket slightly warmer.

J...these jackets ares awesome and I have ordered Barbour products from this store in the UK with no issues. Order the separate liner if the jacket indicates that it needs one for colder weather, and the folks at the store are very easy to communicate with regarding sizing, fit and shipping questions. Your rich friends will be impressed and even the Canada Goose wearing girls in Ann Arbor will take notice.

I work outside a lot year round. I have used Carhartt since the 70s, I still haven't found anything better. The companies I have worked for usually give out a coat in the fall, the non-Carhartt coats are usually shot by the first of the year. I prefer to get the ones with less insulation and looser fitting and then layer up and down to meet the weather with a hoodies, long-johns, vests, etc.

Can always go military surplus route. M65 w a liner is pretty warm and durable. ECWCS system has a puffer type deep winter jacket and even the reputable N3B parka can be found
