Store in garage?

Hi PL,

Does anyone here store their go to bike in the garage? Do you lock it up in there? Or do you bring it in the house every time?

Climate controlled humidors for each material. Steel, aluminum, titanium, carbon, wood, paper and tobacco frames all have specific requirements.

But when they’re not in the humidors they’re in the garage or basement overflow parking.

Define "go to bike".

I think of my "go to bike" as an errand bike/the bike i reach for when I need to run and get something i forgot at the store. That bike stayin the basement.

The road bike lives in the house with me. The mtb lives in the basement mainly because its dirty and I dont want to get the house all gross but I lock it to one of the plumbing pipes down there.

I'm storing mine in the house now. My garage is a non attached at my condo and very humid. Nothing stays nice down there if stored over a long time even with a dehumidifier. My kayaks are there but bikes in the condo. I'm down to 1 road and 1 single speed, so it's easy for me...

Garage. Our neighborhood is relatively safe. My neighbor has left his Santa Cruz FS MTB in the front yard overnight and it hasn't been stolen yet. Although I think that is actually rather careless.

Also my garage is wired by a WiFi opener/sensor. I have it set up so my phone will blast "The Sign" by Ace of base if it is open after certain hour at night.

I might move my bike to the basement if I am going to be out extensively.

I live in the city, and my spouse is house-proud. So my daily driver lives in the back yard, whilst I have a lockup around the corner for finished projects and in-progress projects live in the loft / attic.

I live just south Houston of have been storing my bikes in the garage for almost 30 years. The only problems I have ever had is that Michelin tires would ooze pink slime from the casing after 6- 8 months or the end of summer and that handlebar tape would get a funky smell after 3 months. Other than that, no problems in a non-climate controlled garge that will get to 90+ in the summer and mornings of 100% humidity. I do have some big eyebolts screwed into the wall studs with cables to lock up the bikes to keep them from walking but they won't stop a determined thief. I keep steel, carbon and aluminum frames and extra wheels and don't have problems. It also means that the wife is happy because I don't drop grease on the floors or rugs.

Depends on the person and neighborhood... I am very old school / scarred from a couple of bike thefts when I was young and penniless, so I tend to be more paranoid about these things than the next person. Still, I have my commuter bike in the garage, though we live in a nice neighborhood (*knock on wood*)...

Now, I loaned two bikes to some young people in my employ, and they keep them on the porch, unlocked. No theft yet, but............ Can’t people buy a $5 hook at the hardware store and find the 5 mins to put it into the wall / ceiling?.. or throw a cheap lock around as deterrent?..

Grump grump, carmudge carmudge...

We keep our bikes in the garage, but my garage is 2/3 bike workshop, 1/3 normal garage (wife keeps her car in the garage, I keep mine outside so I have more room for bikes).
