last great rim frame?
i'm still rolling on my lugged carbon time from like 2003/4. rim brakes, threaded bb, 130qr, etc. build had been upgraded continuously so it's on zipp 101 firecrests and etap 11sp.
i like the build. nothing wrong with the frame, and for the type of rider i am it's still plenty, but wondering what the last gen of these old standard frames had to offer. i don't race. hell, i hardly put in road miles anymore actually. but from time to time i do roll down my driveway in road kit. so from that weirdo period when half the pro peloton was disc and half rim, what was the last great rim brake frameset in your opinion that i could track down? dm brakes are fine, as long as i can keep my wheelset. |

The end state carbon rim frames from say 2018-2021 from Cervelo, Trek, Giant, etc. will usually take a fat 28mm tire (measured 30mm tire), be stiff, light. I have a 2018 Cervelo R3 rim, it is available with interchangeable plugs for the stops so you can run mechanical, Di2, or eTAP...

I love that "golden era" of rim brake frames in the 2000s. Lots of good output in the form of Colnago C series frames (C50, EP, EPS, Extreme C), Parlee Z1/2/3, Look/Time frames, etc. I still ride and enjoy framesets from this era, and will always have these in my stable.
Moving forward a bit, I would say that the last great rim frame in my opinion would be the 2017 SuperSix Evo HiMod. Almost level top tube, roundish tubes, great tire clearance, mechanical, rim brakes. Ride quality is great, and it does everything very well; all-purpose brawler. |

So I love my aluminum, rim brake race bikes. I still swear an older rim brake Allez sprint is the greatest bike ever made.
BUTTTT I picked up a sl6 tarmac expert (10r) with direct mount brakes. And I cannot stop raving about it! Rides like an aero race bike but more comfortable than my endurance bikes. Fits huge tires. Fast. Easy to work on. Etc etc etc. Also, It makes me sad direct mount wasn’t around earlier because it could have delayed the jump to disc, imo. |

My 3 favs rim brake bikes; Colnago Extreme Power, Last year Race Shop Domane rim brake [2017] and Bianchi Specialissima CV.. The ITA bikes have SR and the RSL/SLR has Di2.
I ride these most by a lot. A few disc road have passed thru my stable last 5 years. I am out of them now, and learned by owning and riding them I am a 28" rotor guy. Fun learning experience I did not loose too much coin by the way I went about catch/releases. Even my gravel disc bike, I'd just as soon take one of two pinnacle Canti CX in my stable [with Pauls brakes]. This is where the last few years has gotten me disc wise. I don't try to convert anybody, but I am not alone in this path either.

I may be biased, but the C-64 is that bike IMHO. Light, fast and probably the best road bike I have thrown a leg over.

Last great rim brake bike if you’re not a racer?
Starts with a ‘P’ and ends with ‘etti’. Although that C64 is certainly another good choice.

Seen this Thread titled "Rim Brake Perfection, lets fan boy yours.."
https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=299875 Lots of older stuff, but also lots of modern Pinnacle Rim brake representations in the long thread.

Carbon, TCR Advanced Pro/SL.
Otherwise, I have Ritchey Logic (technically a 2024 model) that I ride more than any road bike I own, including some much more 'advanced', lighter, aero, etc. ones. It's possible a Peg and similar exotica ride nicer, but I love this bike and the frame is a relatively inexpensive $1600-1700. Built with Hed Ardennes RA Black, Schwalbe Pro One 700x28 tubeless, Sram Force AXS 1x (48x10-44), Easton EA90 stem, Cadex AR bars, Ritchey carbon post. A smidge under 18 lbs all built up with pedals and cages. |

It’s hard to find fault here. And direct mount to boot. Looks like a fantastic ride!

I have one, and the older round tube E5 aluminum frames were better IMO.

Cervelo Super Prodigy. Good luck finding one, though.

I have one of the last Rim Brake Domanes (and would not trade it for a new one) and love that bike but I think the last great rim brake probably hasn't been built since they are still easy to come by if you order custom.
And it's going to completely depend on a given rider's preference. |

I ride and love my Extreme Power, and this me very tempted to try to find a Race Shop Domane 2017.
