I think since the 6/4 titanium basically started out as a sheet rather than a tube, going with these 'airfoil' downtubes made some sense. I think Merckx also had one like that back in the day - the Millenium model.

Yes, the Slingshot was a wet noodle. I bought one used years ago to try it out. It was comfy when riding in a straight line but any hard cornering would result in massive torsional flex. Very unnerving so I sold it pretty quickly. I have a friend that has one built up as a commuter. Probably the best application for it.
