Beware: Fake XTR Pedals
I ordered a set of XTR pedals from ebay last week and they arrived yesterday.
I could immediately tell something was "off" and having a lot of experience with XTR and Dura-Ace pedals, I could tell that the way the bearings felt was not right. Found this very detailed post on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling/c...identify_them/ which confirmed that fakes do exist, and they do look pretty close, for sure. Went back and viewed the seller's ebay feedback, and several negative comments about fake parts of all sorts of bike parts. Ebay doesn't seem to care about this, but IMO, they should.

You gotta admit that they sure put in a lot of work to make those appear legit.

exactly. unless i had seen and felt the bearings of real xtr pedals before, it would have been hard to pickup on, for sure.

Not using eBay, ever, for anything, is a good first step. Same with Amazon. I’ve stopped all bike related purchases from them after receiving fake Shimano cleats a few years ago. I haven’t looked at eBay in years.
I’m long past trying to save a few dollars as an individual by buying stolen ideas of products and copies from them and aliexpress. Last edited by Likes2ridefar; 07-25-2024 at 02:18 PM. |

Did you have this same issue as mentioned in the Reddit thread?
"...the bearing action was really tight and they were also leaking a thick grease after my rides." |

As a long time xtr pedal rider I can say that the real 9100 pedals suck just as bad as fakes. Bearing axle seal wiggles out and the bearings go to **** fast.

I don't trust Amazon or eBay for bike consumables like chains, pedals, cleats, etc. Too many counterfeits are still out there.
I go to my LBS or order from REI. To my knowledge, REI has none of the counterfeit problems the "marketplaces" like Amazon/eBay have. |

Performance has a 25% coupon that worked. I’ll let you know when I get them.

Ugh. I'm pretty sure I fell for this as well. Luckily mine have been working okay, but I've ended up with a few sets of shimano pedals bought used locally or otherwise that are likely legit so I'll be swapping over to one of those if mine start acting up.
I'll go home and compare my pedals to the real deal using calipers and the photo tells. Mine also consistently leak a grease which is annoying. I also bought some 105 pedals a long time ago that leak some grease... now I'm wondering if those were fake too. Sheeettttt. I might have to order another set of used pedals from a legit seller. Wowza. Thanks for the info and the solid reddit link. |

This is my same mentality also. Beyond LBS or REI, I will order from WWC, BikeTiresDirect, Jenson or BikeCloset for items that I want 100% authenticity.

Do you have the listing link or sellers user ID so I can avoid buying from them?
Usually, I buy from bike shops on eBay (Bells, Bikesmith, etc). But good PSA about fake parts. Didn’t know fake XTR was a thing. |

OP ordered from ebay, so that's on him. Hopefully it resolves in a just and satisfactory fashion. Having said that, some reputable shops sell on ebay, but you can't just assume that because the account name is recognizable that the seller is who you think it is.

Been said already, but its crazy how close they are in comparison.
I've been guilty of buying off ebay but thanks for the PSA |

I do not buy any new bike parts anymore off eBay or Amazon. It’s worth going with reputable sources because I have received fake parts from both sites before. I’d rather pay close to or full price from BDD, or direct from the manufacturer site than the hassle to save a few dollars. Otherwise, it’s mostly here for used items or used items off eBay that clearly look like the seller took the photos and it’s in fact used.
