I love Bill Walton and admire the joy he expresses, but gosh I would rather not listen to his basketball commentary.

Ryan Fagan wrote down a whole lot of Bill Walton quotes from a single game on Tuesday: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa...u1x4s8ax8s59br. Examples: Quote:

I'm astonished he's still able to ride. I sat next to him at the Final Four probably 15yrs ago. With his bad knees, he was barely able to make it up and down the stairs to his seat. It was painful to watch. Perhaps subsequent legalization of cannabis products can be credited? I've got some friends with messed up knees (not as bad as BW), who swear daily intake of CBD has changed their lives.

I have a picture somewhere with him. I was about 13, probably 5'4" and he towers over me. You know he struggled with stuttering? Still, ESPN needs to fire him. He's incompetent as a commentator |

I think I'd watch more college basketball if the commentators just talked about getting high and descending through mountain passes.

But one story he talks about is how much he loves Cal and the City of Berkeley. At one point, he wanted to play basketball at UCLA, but go to Cal for classes or something like that. Coach Wooden said no, you can't do that. Outrageous, over the top and his bball analysis is really questionable. But he sounds like a fun guy and it would be interesting going for a ride with him. Good Luck! |

My loyalty to Bruin basketball was cemented at an early age -- I went to elementary school on the UCLA campus during the Alcindor years. I think his time at UCLA was the apex of his career. He can say whatever he wants, if I watch college hoops it's with the sound off anyway (that's true of most sports). |

I couldn't disagree more. For Pac 12 basketball, he's the perfect color commentator. He knows both the players, and fun tidbits about their families as well as a lot of Pac 10-12 history. Every time he comes to Tucson, he talks about hiking and riding his bike in the desert. When his son Luke played at Arizona, I'd often see Luke out on his bike.
I know he is not everybody's cup of tea. He does talk over the play by play guy, but he does get non-basketball fans to listen, including my wife. Quote:

Screenshot 2020-12-03 at 4.52.28 PM.png Screenshot 2020-12-03 at 4.51.41 PM.png Here's the list of all now 529 NCAA championships won by the conference, over 200 more than the next league. "The only conference to win 500 NCAA Championships, the Pac-12 captured three of the seven national championships contested in 2019-20 before all sports competition was canceled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic adding to a legacy that includes 193 NCAA team titles claimed since 1999-2000 and 333 since 1981-82, the start of women’s sports sponsorship, an average of over eight per year. Even more impressive has been the breadth of the Pac-12’s success with championships coming in 28 different men’s and women’s sports. The Pac-12 has led or tied the nation in NCAA Championships in 54 of the last 60 years, with the exceptions coming no lower than third." Last edited by ORMojo; 12-03-2020 at 07:10 PM. |
