“Undercutting” was the term I was thinking of.

I'm not seeing undercutting. Undercutting is what's shown in Louis's first cross section picture.
From Google: Undercut refers to the groove or depression that forms along the edge of the weld bead, where the base metal has melted but has not been adequately filled by the filler metal. |

As an ex AWS CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) I would 100% ride that.

The weld in the OP looks fine and I don't think I've ever looked at welds this closely but now I'm curious about the other two pictures. Do the top tube and seat stay look the teeniest bit undercut on the Firefly?
The Moots welds look 'fuller' to me. If anyone knows, who does single vs. double passes? |

That area looks fine. I have a Litespeed with welds that look like that; a friend who is a certified aircraft welder told me they were functionally sound just not as pretty as they could be. All bikes are tools but only some are also jewels. Others here who are experts in these matters have weighed in and as always this place delivers.

Also, there's a lot of bad and irrelevant information in this thread. Some of you should know when to just leave these kinds of questions to the handful of us that actually have experience in such things. |

I'm to a welder but I've had a lot of Ti bikes and I never would have questioned it. That said, imagine what is hidden under the paint on steal and carbon bikes that no one would ever see or question.
