Specialized Recon Lugs Breaking

Anyone else had this issue? I searched online and saw one other person saying the same thing when these shoes were used with Crankbrothers Candy pedals.
Any idea on how to prevent this from happening other than switching pedals?

Shimano made these pontoons also, might want to give these a try.

Those 'pontoons' are for using MTB/SPD cleats on shoes w/o 'lugs', like road shoes, so you can still walk around w/o killing the cleats. Don't think they will fit onto MTB shoes with lugs, even if they are torn up like the OP's.

I'm assuming the issue is the shoes we're designed with no platform in mind and the candy's platform is the problem. Depending on age of the shoes, I would try contacting specialized directly or a shop and see if you can warranty them. I'd also perhaps switch to egg beaters.

I’d consider using a better pedal. Crank Brothers has to be the worst clipless system I’ve ever tried.

Those lugs interface much better with a SPD design. I use them with Look X-Track. Extra platform isn’t needed at all with a sole that stiff.

lugs

I'm considering switching to SPD's. I just bought Crankbrother Candy 11's. I had some older S-works shoes that had no problems with my old candy pedals. Frustrating since I just switched to new pedals.

I've been using those shoes with SPD"s for a year without a problem.

CB make metal shims you can run under the cleat to protect carbon soles. These are also useful if you have really tall lugs on shoes that make it hard to clip in (like winter boots). Probably too late for these shoes, but if you want to stick with CB pedals, these may help: https://www.crankbrothers.com/produc...s&_ss=e&_v=1.0

I couldn't get on with those things, at least not on Time pedals. I tried them with high hopes, but the racket was unbearable - worth having to replace $500 shoes more frequently. Are they more tolerable with CB pedals?

ps. No one needs to suggest SPD pedals to me.

I picked up some of these S-works Recons used and while the uppers are perfect the lugs are really gummy and crumbling a bit.

I'd hoped there was a replacement lug available but hadn't checked yet. Probably wishful thinking.

interesting how different (better?) the Recon 3 looks

https://www.bikeparts.com/BPCK120417...cast-umber-385

I know heavier and not as stiff as Sworks.

No replacement lugs like the older version S-Works road shoes. I wish they would've made them replaceable. No warranty on used ones either...

Indeed, just got off the phone with Spec and NOT replaceable And for reference, I use non-platform SPDs.

I tinker/waste my time with too many things and I suspect a tread block could be fashioned and attached with contact cement but it's pretty low on my list right now. The Wellgo product might work if you shaved the existing block area down to the sole (which I'd need to do with my own fix as well).

Overall, I find the shoes are only pretty good. I'm surprised pretty regularly at what paid designers (in all arenas) settle on with respect to fit and performance, etc...

I ended up getting a new pair, but plan on switching pedals. Hopefully it doesn't happen with SPD's or else I'll be switching shoe brands.
