I've yet to get my big kid job, so many of my bike choices are financially motivated. I last bought a bike with the pre R7000 105 and upgraded to R7000 to swap parts over and sell a different bike.
R7000 is phenomenal. I love it so much. It easily compares to the performance of DA7800 that I bought used on here when I was racing in college. My 'gravel' bike came with RS685 shifters which feel really awesome as well. The point of biggest diminishing returns is past 105. I would definitely spend more if I had the cash available to save weight and get something shinier but from a performance standpoint it's honestly gotten to the point where it's a legit wash. Edit: I hope they don't do away with mechanical shifting on 105 but I've ridden claris on my commuter for a bit and it's quite alright. |

The total system is probably pretty good in reality, even if the joint is an odd choice for application. As I understand it Hirth joints are best in high-speed, low-torque applications (jet engines, for example) - so I like poking fun at it but of course anything can be made to work, and I have no doubt that Camapgnolo cranks work just fine. So maybe it'll be all Campy after all!
