OT: Upper Midwest XC Ski Towns

What are Forumites' favorite XC ski towns in Minn and Wis?

My wife and I usually do at least one XC ski trip to Colorado every winter. The altitude adjustment from 800ft to 8,500ft is getting more difficult as we age so thinking we ought to drive north instead of west. We're looking for some towns with scenic xc ski trails. I'm a little familiar with the Hayward/Cable area. Curious if there are other towns that are similar or better. Small towns are fine with us, just need a cabin/condo, local eatery, and fast internet.

Cable, WI: https://www.cable4fun.com/play-home/...ountry-skiing/. Edit: I should have read the OP more closely, he already knew of this area.

+1 on Marquette. Awesome outdoor sports community with superb trails, great food, kidding etc.

Minocqua WI is a good option too. Minocqua Winter Park is a great area, and there are a number of other areas within a reasonable drive.

I've always been partial to Duluth as the gateway to the North Shore.

I'd start in Duluth for a two or three days. Then start heading up the North Shore. Stopping at Lutsen etc.... In peak winter, the North Shore is a cool place with the ice, the lake, etc.
I'd get a condo at Bluefin Bay. The food here is good.

The good thing for you is it doesn't get as cold as it did in the 70's, and gear is better.

Maplelag in Callaway, MN. This was rated one of the top XC ski resorts in the world. They have all types of cabins you can stay in, and meals are included. There's not much around in a 20 mile radius, so that's a good thing. The trails are outstanding and well maintained. Many miles of groomed fatbike trails as well. The resort portion is closed for the winter season but the trails are open.

Better hurry - if the latest weather's any indication, winter's just about over.

Very true. One benefit in going to 8500 feet is they will likely have ski-able snow longer.
