If you want to experience some crazy light wheels, I'll cut you a deal in these ones...just need to be taped/glued.. they're NOS. I may even have some Campy carbon pads... Though you'd need a Campy FHB for them.

I have a couple sets of all silver Eurus wheelset for retro classics and they get my vote.

Look like these:

+1. I spent a long time searching for these some years ago in vain, before eventually settling for black Shamal Ultras.

I had a similar wheelset to the OPs (silver Record hubs, Mavic silver rims) on a steel Colnago. Eventually, after much internal debate over aesthetic issues, got Zondas. As others have previously noted, they were an appreciable improvement.

oh yeah, I bought those. They are fantastic.

But for the OP, nothing like a nice set of light-ish carbon wheels. I am loving the fulcrums because the braking is pretty damn great. At about 1450g they spin fast enough for me.

A bit OT, but interesting to know that the Fulcrum Quattro Carbon wheels are fantastic. Curiously, they are one of the rare Campagnolo/Fulcrum wheels that have gotten less than rave reviews from various bike mags.
Back to the OP's question. If wanting to stick with silver wheels, the Eurus that Marc Sasso suggested, particularly if you can find the one's with the carbon Bora level hubs (2005-2007 I believe or thereabouts) would be stellar. Or get Old Potatoe to build you a set.
Re Zondas specifically, I would do that. I went through the same questioning as OP and didn't regret it. Zonda's were an improvement over the Record/Mavic wheelset and they're also the proverbial 'bang for the buck' if you're sticking to a budget. My 2 cents.

'Might' be weight altho I think small weight differences and saying THAT is the reason one feels better than another is overplayed, IMHO.
So much goes into 'feel' of one bike to another and a LOT is placebo.

PLUS, interject a 'rider' and 'all things being equal' kinda goes out the window, cuz it never is.

I 'feel' a difference between my Moots and MXLeader too..and the MXLeader 'feel's lighter when I ride it. Feels 'brighter' but it sure isn't lighter.

Take one bike and ride it..swap the wheels to uber light wheels(carbon)..and it WILL 'feel' faster..but I don't think it's those 400-500 grams but the stiffness of the carbon wheels compared to aluminum.

When I was riding a LOT..I lost about 10 pounds..Oh Boy, did I 'feel' faster.
