Campagnolo Monoplaner Brakes

The recent thread on the Delta's got me thinking about these. They are certainly in the running for the best of the single pivots made. They are beefy, look fantastic and work very well indeed.

Yet I seldom see them on anything from that era. Here shown on my '92 Chesini Arena. Anyone else running a set?

I'm running several sets. I love the look of them. They stop well enough, too.

Big fan. There's such a jumble Campagnolo groups and components from that era it's fun to sort through them and get the pieces running again.

I have a couple of Athena sets. Stop well enough, but dual-pivot Chorus and up make me feel more confident.

Like these... ?

Beautiful, with good braking power, but like Mike said, not quite equal to dual-pivot brakes.

In 2nd shot the bike has salmon KoolStops, which do help.

agreed.monoplaners as well as deltas were some of the best looking brakes ever made but most everything Campy put out in the era was just more beautiful than any components that came before or after imo.some of wasn't the best performing stuff but It sure was lovely to look at.
I did buy a set of monoplaners on closeout years ago from R&A,the one and only purchase ever from those guys.
I do recall the springs were super stiff compared to any other calipers I had ever tried and the stock pads were pretty crappy, like the delta pads.
btw,the Chesini looks spectacular too!

From memory Sean Kelly, and perhaps a few of his PDM team mates, rode "down spec" Chorus monoplanar brakes on their otherwise C-Record-equipped Concordes in the mid/late 1980s. Not sure whether this was rider or mechanic's choice, and I can't recall if other Campagnolo-equipped teams did likewise...

Probably just another of the shenanigans going on when Delta brakes were in their infancy. Production or other problems with early Deltas saw the Colbalto caliper, basically a Super Record caliper with a decoration, introduced as a stopgap measure about 1985, but that's another story.

First gen Deltas has problems with the QR and also some early rust issues..Colbato-SR with a blue 'stone'..

Yup, Kelly and Monoplaners..still with toe clips I think..GREAT video of him and Sean Yates going at on their 8 or so trips up hill in Cork(?) I think, Tour of Ireland..in the rain..

Just a few more pix for these beautiful '91-'94 Chorus BR-02CH Monoplaner brakes. There were also 3 or 4 lesser variants of the Monoplaner in lower groupsets.

Sand and polish your nuts. They will be as good as new.
