Campy Ergo Lever Conversion?

I've got a pair of first generation Ergo levers that are 9 speed (just like the image) that I am fantasizing about converting to 10 speed. I know that Jan Ullrich had his levers converted, but I'm sure that was arranged with Campagnolo as part of his sponsorship (and I'm no Jan Ullrich, either then or now ). I know that with the second generation (the more rounded hoods) it is possible, but is this possible with the first generation shape? Would the conversion work with a Record 10 speed rear derailleur or would the shifter throw length be different?

It can be done. This is a 10 speed bike.

Record 8 rear shift lever converted to 10
Stock front shift lever
10 speed derailleurs
10 speed chainrings (not absolutely required, but the big ring was worth the cost)
10 speed chain and cassette
10 speed brake pads (8spd pictured but now 10spd record ti to fit the theme)

To convert the lever, you will need to replace the internals with all of the guys from a 10 speed lever. The only exception is the rear “clock spring.” There is no prevision for it in the point levers but it will work without. I also drilled a clearance hole in the rear part of the body that sits behind the pivot. The 10spd lever has a recess for the bolt head and it looked like it was going to contact in it’s new home. Drilling the hole was quick, easy, and could be mistaken for OEM.

In short, it can absolutely be done but is not a way to upgrade to 10 speed on the cheap. Selling these and buying 10 speed levers is the cheaper and easier answer. If you specifically want pointy levers that go to 10, then it is absolutely possible.

Wow TGB, another reason to really like that Tommasini. I didn't need another reason, but a 10sp conversion just ices it.

Thanks!

The shifters and crank arms are actually left over from the very first build my father did on the frame. When I acquired the bike from him, it had record 10 and the shamals. I decided to blend the two builds by returning it to the period 8spd look but retaining 10 speed and the excellent shamals. The updated delta brakes were my personal touch but it was something he always wanted but couldn’t justify.

I actually converted the levers to 10 before taking ownership of the frame, but having them ready to go made it an easy build decision.
