Ellis, without doubt. Maybe a Kirk, as he makes such nice stuff, but probably an Ellis.

I think we are need more info. Is there a gap in your current rides that you are trying to fill? Is there a itch you are trying to scratch? In other words, is it just you have $5k burning a hole in your pocket or is there some other reason to buy this bike?

Legor Cicli XCr

No-nonsense Italian builder who apprenticed under Dario and Zullo. A rider's builder, who rides his frames hard, and welds flawlessly. XCr just to take it up a notch.

Thanks for that--always interesting to know about new-to-me builders...

If it were me--I would buy a decent used S&S steel bike and case for around the $2000 mark (if possible) and spend the other $3000 on a cycling trip to France...

Agree....there are a TON of bike frames out there made from the 4 most common materials.

Throw in vintage, 'preowned'...the field is YUGE...

You've got $5k to spend on a road frame. What are you buying and why?

If custom then I’d strongly recommend working with Dave Kirk or Richard Sachs.
You simply won’t have a better experience with these guys. Dave’s Onesto is wonderful and I think you can have rim or disc brakes. I think Richard is offering his road builds in standard rim brake setup.

For big brand bikes I have to say the Bianchi Specialissima frames (carbon) are impressive! I have one that I built up about a year ago and really dig it! I like it so much that I ordered the newest disc brake version. Just can’t predict when it will arrive. If I thought that it was going to take another year to get then I would most likely have pulled the trigger on the 54cm Specialized Athos that was in the classifieds. I think the Athos would be one of those bikes that just disappears under you.

I’m not sure why discs would factor into the equation, even given that you’re a tepid descender. It’s dry here in the East Bay, and you’ve previously stated an aversion to larger volume tires. So, IMO, that really negates the advantages of discs.

If memory serves, you also are not fond of Ti. And you already have a carbon race rocket. (The Gaulzetti)

So steel it is.

People have already mentioned Kirk or Ellis. Can’t go wrong with Erik Rolf at Alliance. But I vote for Pete Olivetti, who made my steel race bike: https://forums.thepaceline.net/showt...light=Olivetti

I’m not sure how high a premium you place on customer service and interpersonal relationships, but you seem to have a great relationship with Craig. Pete is kind of beneath the radar on this Forum, but he’s an outstanding guy with excellent customer service skills. Bonus: best head badge this side of Carl Strong.

Made this same decision myself over the past year.
70th birthday present.
Pegoretti, Falz carbon fork, custom paint, down tube shifter braze-ons.
Should arrive any day now.
Perhaps this afternoon if the Brown Truck Gods are smiling upon me.

Lots of great suggestions but to provide a recommendation I’d want to know if you want a race rocket or an all day bike. I think there are frames that do both reasonably well but tires and wheels factor in too.

I really like this question as it’s one I’ve been pondering as well.

Joe, why not another/different Scarab. Prior one(sorry to hear) seemed pretty stellar!
