Before I switched to tubeless on my gravel bike, I had good luck with the Conti Speed Ride for an inexpensive entry point. I had better luck with these than with the tubed Gravelking SKs. I have clearance for 42s, but if I recall those Contis ran slightly undersized and are (were?) also available in a 35 or 38 as well. This was some D2R2 type riding, for what it’s worth. But they were fine on pavement as well.

But big YES on Gravel Kings. The SS version (semi slick?) is my current new fave. |

Get yourself some GK SK in 32 or 35mm. They are a great set of tires!

I disagree with the 32 recommendations. You have a road bike that likely fits a 28. Now you purchased a bike for playing off pavement. I would embrace it and go full-in with some cushion. I find 32’s to be a lovely middle ground do-it-all tire, but I always prefer 35’s for the country roads around here and still thoroughly enjoy them on pavement. Go 35’s with Rene Herse/Compass or Gravel Kings.
My 2 cents, which is possibly worth a couple pennies less. |

I’ve been happy with the gravelking superslicks (ss). They’re great in everything except for when you’re trying to put down power in mud. Also not sure if anyone has the same experience with other gravelking lines but they were absolutely awful to try and set up tubeless. Would not pop onto rim… I had to inflate with a tube and then pop one side off to remove the tube.

I have a bike with WTB Byway 34s and one with Schwalbe G-One 40mm. 40 is a bit too much for the dirt around here. I like the WTBs smooth tread with just enough grip on the shoulders.
