Bicycling magazine cover bike 1986

I have a weird question - maybe a WTB ad, but really just a request to see something.

I helped a buddy buy a Marinoni roadie about 15yrs ago that was touted as the cover bike for Bicycling magazine in 1986 (IIRC)

Does anyone have a copy of that magazine kicking around and can snap a photo of it? I want to see it that is really the case.

Thanks in advance….

You might contact SpeedofLite on Bike Forums Classic & Vintage as he has posted several threads featuring old issues of Bicycling! magazine ranging from the 70's through the 90's.

Thanks - it is probably not worth the chase, but I was curious as to it’s provenance.

Thanks! I am not 100% sure that it was on the cover, but I think it was. It may have been 'featured' as a handbuilder in some issue.

FYI, the frame was goldish/greenish elaborate airbrushed Euro-style paintjob. I would suspect it had Record parts hanging on it.

Google "Bicycling Magazine Covers." Lots of old photos show up, but I did not go through them.

Sorry, I went through what I had, but no luck. I only had one 1986 issue too.

Road bike Action used to feature a handmade bike each month, I think. That was a long time ago. Maybe it was there?

Yes, I think you are right - it was RBA. Still a dead end thus far!

Don't forget Bicycle Guide. Didn't they do the "Hot Tubes" section of custom/artisan bikes?

I finally got to see the bike tonight after about 10years of us living in different countries. I was trying to convince him to sell it and buy a gravel bike, but damn, this thing is soooo awesome! The cassette is way too small - I need to find the biggest cassette possible in 8spd campy for him.

I also forgot that when I switched out the bar and stem 10years ago, I dropped them and broke the Chorus ergo shifter paddle. The only thing I could find was a set of Mirage ones - feeling bad right about now

I told him to keep this bike and screw the gravel bike trend - he loves it too much and is an occasional rider…

Another vote for Bicycle Guide. They had the best articles about American builders in the late 80s. Davidson got a spread for sure, and a bunch of others.

Also, this picture says so much to me about what bicycles used to be:
