Fog sealing

My street just got fog sealed. The town didn’t explain what the heck it was till today.

It’s a new process that’s a quick/cheap thing to extend the life of the road, similar to chip seal, but way preferable for cyclists as it’s nice and grippy.

Thumbs up. I guess it’s been a few years since I rode down a really sketchy freshly chip sealed road. No rush to do that any more than I have to.

City did the same here. Looks OK on most streets, but some (like the one in front of our house) visually reflects being done on a Friday afternoon, lumpy and thin in areas. Plus they ground down all the crosswalks and limit lines so for three days cars were blowing through the 4 way stop, evidently people don't look at Stop signs, just limit lines.

Interesting. They didn’t grind my street. They did on some others in town.

Strangely they re-applied all the crosswalks and limit lines the following week, but didn't (haven't?) replaced the sharrows (our street is a designated bike route).

Until now I didn't know this was called "fog sealing" but I have definitely biked on a handful of roads where this has been done. For several weeks after the road has been sealed it will sound like my tires are rolling over the sticky side of packing tape. Makes me feel like I'm riding even slower than usual, but that could just be in my head. After going down hard in the wet a few years ago, I do appreciate the value of extra gription.

I didn't know this was a thing.
Here is a quick run down from LA County: https://pw.lacounty.gov/gmed/lacroad...ntFogSeal.aspx
