Anyone recognize this? Internal hex on the cups should be a good clue but I don't recall seeing it before. Spindle measures 107 mm. What crank would that be for?

American Classic
A few cranks in the '90s used 108mm BBs, Ritchey Road Logic and XTR to name a couple. Last edited by donevwil; 02-20-2019 at 08:12 PM. |

Thanks for the replies. Pics I have of 1994 AC BBs have 4 pin holes to adjust the cups, and the lock rings have 4 notches. Perhaps I have a later model? Frame is a 1995 Cannondale road, so Ritchey crank sounds likely. I tried a Veloce crank on it tonight and it didn't get close to the right chainline even though the spindle is 4 mm narrower than intended. Seems like the tapers are a bit larger than most JIS.

Maybe the lockring was swapped?

I'd assume Ti spindle (maybe), a magnet would tell you. Here's a 111mm at Bikerecyclery,a beat-to-S... lockringless 104 on the bay and a 113.5 on the bay. No date info, however.

There were some on ebay of both cup types. Thanks for the links. Since I didn't have any JIS cranks that I thought would work and Campagnolo cranks didn't go far enough onto the tapers, I decided to pull it out. Of course I didn't have the hex tool for the cups and couldn't turn either by hand with the lock rings removed. Once again a swap meet purchase to the rescue. I'd picked up a couple of spare Campagnolo Park BB tools at the Chicago swap for $3 each. 20 minutes of filing brought the hex down to the required 15/16" and I didn't hurt the tool for BB/lock ring use. Pretty nice BB, has the plastic weather sleeve but it's not in the pics. Haven't checked the spindle but I suspect it's Ti. Wondering if the small hole in the center of the spindle (I didn't get it in the pic) was used to pump grease in through the bolt holes. Can't think of another reason for it - the sleeve had "lotsa" grease in it.
