J&L 31.8 Quill Stem

Does anyone know anything about these stems?

Are there any safety concerns with 2 bolt alloy stems?

there's nothing inherently problematic with a 2-bolt clamp on an alloy stem. that was the standard design before 4-bolt clamps!

The two-bolt clamps often use 7mm threaded bolts, not 5mm bolts like on 4-bolt road stems.
There is about a 100% increase in cross-sectional area when going from 5mm to 7mm diameter, so it makes sense that it is robust.

At the end of the day, product durability comes down to 1) testing, and 2) quality control.

Thanks for the feedback. I've been looking for a 31.8 stem to use modern bars. Don't like the adapters. I might give this a try and if it doesn't work out, I'll go back to plan A - a custom from Mr. Estlund. I'll just have to beg forgiveness from the wife...

Big difference in cost from what you are looking at, however, if you are going to go custom why not spend $175.00 on this https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=233887

I like it, but I need a removable faceplate for the bars in looking to use.

I just don't get why J L and the other brand that makes these only making them in 2 weird sizes, 80 and 90 mm? At least make them in 100mm which is one of the most popular sizes.

I personally would go for the nitto over those because you can choose your size, nitto is good stuff and yes its ugly but I think the 2 bolt round head ones are too

I second this.
I would consider the J L if the sizes offered weren’t so limited. Why only 80 and 90??

Nitto UI-12 is another option.
