I have a copy of "Haywire Heart" if you'd like to borrow it.. Covers pretty much everything, and has changed how I approach my riding.

After I crumped and had my pacemaker installed I was amazed to read at how prevalent sinus node disease is in masters endurance athletes. I used to think that having a resting heart rate in the 30s was cool. Little did I realize it was the precursor to heart disease.

Athlete's Heart Syndrome

There is an increasing amount of literature on this. Not much of a surprise, really, that decades of intense aerobic training might do long term damage to the heart muscle. Wall thickening might or might not be a problem depending on its causes. Another consideration is that there is some evidence that Afib might be associated with decades of training for competition.

One way to formulate the issue here is to ask whether competitive aerobic sports is worth dying for, because that just might be an outcome.

We all die sometime, just a question of when. Do what you want, live like you want, just be a good steward of your lifestyle and use common sense. You might live to be a hundred.

Generally speaking, if you aren't a Cat 2 by early to mid 20s you become merely a participant. Act accordingly

"Training" in your 30s on out is just suffering, even some time at the anti-aging spa can't stop it. Had 2 riding bros my age get their wings clipped this year from heart issues. Keep it in you shorts and live life to the fullest as I think the heart issue will become more prevalent among those of us that have been riding for years get older
