Hammerhead bought by SRAM

Not sure how I feel, I just got the Karoo 2 in December, it works alright, definitely lacks the polish of the Bolt I had previously, but the "scrappy" nature of their dev cycles was interesting.

With big bad SRAM overlords, I wonder what will change.

Wonder if this will make a better product or SRAM will turn it into a useless POS?

Seems like an odd space for SRAM to go but maybe I’m not thinking this through?

I think Ray has very good insight into the deal and has industry insider perspective of sorts....

Hopefully good stuff comes of it. I'm a Garmin user. However, if Sram would keep all the basic GPS features....and then Sramize the software for integration with their AXS (or whatever else may come), that may be interesting.

I like Sram's push for innovation. I certainly ain't mad at eTap.

Thanks, Rob! I took a look at Ray’s post and it does seem encouraging.

lavi, you make an excellent point about Etap. Let’s hope for this w/re to the Karoo2 and not Zipp hubs.

You mean Sram's push for vertical integration?

As a recent Karoo 2 owner, I'm not stoked. I don't need another Apple vs Android ecosystem battle, as Sram will almost certainly move to lock out cross compatibility like they have already on many fronts.

It makes a lot of sense in the context of their recent power meter related purchases, power tap and Time. It could also play well with the new adaptive suspension.

How do you see this playing out with re to PMs? They already had quarq and now powertap. In my view, the better head unit or PM is brand agnostic w re to what you pair it with. This said, I don’t think it hurts them but it seems like SRAM allows most of its acquisitions to continue to operate somewhat autonomously. I’m guessing there’s a strategy of sorts but they don’t seem hell-bent on integration. Mostly just thinking out loud here.

You're right that having things that shine on their own are great. But when you think about the options to integrate a drivetrain, suspension and power, a head unit really brings it all together. It could be a great R&D resource as well by allowing SRAM to learn how people are actually using their equipment as opposed to just educated guesses. Consumers can benefit from that as well, do I really need lower gearing, oh my head unit says I never use my current lower gear so I guess I don't. Or maybe it says you spend a bunch of time in your low gear and going lower would be a good idea.
