River Bottoms - Be Careful! (Crash content)

I've been sidelined from outdoor riding for the past month while I slowly recover from a nasty rib injury after falling on our icy driveway (not bike-related). Yesterday's weather was much too nice for me to ride inside any longer (23ºf / -5ºc) so I loaded up my fat bike and headed for the river bottoms. The trails were silky smooth and riding great on my 4" studded Dillingers with 4 psi (.27 bars) front and rear. I managed to crash about 15 minutes into my ride when I caught my left pedal on a large branch that was protruding through the snow on a lightly used section of the trail. Of course, I had to include it in the video below, minus the string of expletives that involuntarily came out of my mouth!

Nicely done! including the crash. Glad you weren't hurt of course. Strangely mesmerizing to watch this, the music makes it. Perhaps its a mix of empathy and my dark sense of humor that a laugh burst out of me when you fell (having endo'ed four times myself in 2021).

Thank you! Ha! I get that. We've all been there and will be there again. At 64, tho, I'm getting too old to be throwing my body around like that!

A Return

I've been restricting my riding to my indoor trainer for the past 7 weeks after a fall that resulted in injured ribs. It was nice to make my way back to the trails again yesterday and to feel the sun on my face.

Let's Ride Bikes! In the Wind!

Some of us are dragging out our winter gear to get some gravel miles in here in the Minneapolis area as spring weather continues to be mostly a no-show. These are a few snippets from yesterday afternoon's ride with some of the guys from Cannon Valley Velo Club in Northfield, MN. A good time and a good workout!

Minnesota River Bottoms

The Minnesota River is mostly within its banks but the waters are still receding some and for the most part, the trails are in fine shape. It's so nice to be on my mountain bike again. I needed that.

Come on along and let me show you!

More Wind but also some Beautiful Gravel!

I ventured out last Saturday to do this ride but turned back after almost being blown off my bike a couple of times in gusts of nearly 40 mph (64 kph). Yesterday's wind wasn't quite as strong but it was punishing nonetheless. Still, it was nice to be out riding on some beautiful gravel roads while taking in a scenic backdrop of rolling hills, farm fields ready for planting, and prairie grass along the way. Come on along and let me show you!

Tuesday Night Gravel, aka TNG

We have a Tuesday Night Gravel ride, affectionately known as TNG, out of Northfield, MN that has been growing in popularity. Last night's turnout was in excess of 30 riders (plus 2 deer that momentarily joined us). A very fun time indeed!

Tng

Our Tuesday Night Gravel ride has become a thing! We've had 30+ riders turnout the past two weeks. That's quite a lot. We stopped at Chapel Brewing in Dundas to top off our reserves before finishing the final few miles to Northfield. Lots of fun!

The Inaugural Heywood 110 Gravel Ride

I spent yesterday participating in the inaugural Heywood 110 gravel ride out of Northfield, Mn. The ride is held on some of the most scenic gravel roads in the region with a good amount of climbing. A brisk wind made for some tough finishing miles but only added to the experience. Such fun!

Jordan Loop and More

To date, light winds have been in short supply this spring and early summer in Minnesota. Yesterday was a welcomed exception.

No Particular Place to Be

I went out yesterday in search of gravel roads I've not yet ridden. My Wandrer app makes this very easy to do by highlighting in red on my Garmin's map view any roads I've yet to ride. I found nearly 20 miles (32 km) worth of new-to-me gravel roads. My quest to find more continues!
