routing on this old steel frame

newish territory for me building on older stuff with older stuff...

gonna upload a couple pix, dont know how to insert them in this here post.. but i know you guys are smart guys and will follow what im askin..

firstly - this chainstay shift cable brazeon.... wont accept a regular modern ferrule - whats the part/procedure?

secondly - i really like to cross my shift cables under the dt for that clean routing around the head tube. i understand this is less practical or even kind of considered impossible by some on some bikes.. this frame is probably one of those examples, with the way the cables route over the bb shell... but im a stubborn sumbisch and wanna make it happen anyway. if i reverse the downtube brazeon adapters the cables still wrap around the underside of the downtube pretty bad.. im guessing the answer to this'n is: either rub housings on the head tube or really rub cables on the underside of the downtube, and thats that.. but if anyone has any tips for this, id be much grateful.

thanks ladies, gents, and non-binaries.

1)

you need a step-down ferrule, available here for $2, but you could probably find them elsewhere. many cable kits come with them.

2)

i usually cross my cables too under the DT, but in this case, i dont think it's going to work for you. stick to the standard routing or i bet the shifting will suffer.

As Angry Says...

I have several vintage steel bikes.

Use the cable guides as they are intended.

Shifting will be fine that way. Routing under the BB is not recommended (at least from this old guy!).

thanks brother... ran down to my local retro shop and snagged a step-down ferrule, as well as a piece o 5mm compressionless housing, since the only step-downs they had were 5mm.

should be riding this bike in a couple hours!

Looks like a pretty well built frame from the pics, should make for a solid bike. I just stuck some 9spd shifty stuff on an old 80s race frame I had, enjoy the ride!

If you used DT shifters you wouldn't have the cable problem.

I agree with the others, there's probably no good way to cross the cables with the guides on top of the BB.

right you are, and id originally fully intended to do DT shifters on this proj, but a bruh offered me a full set of nearly new 7700, and man.... i do love that group. its not period for the frame obviously, but its gorgeous.. and my stoke is high overall. she wont be the lightest steel bike, but shes gonna ride and steez well.

I'm building an 84 trek with 5800 and there are so many little pain in the ass things like this.

I don't recall dealing with this ish when I was in college and built it with ten speed campy.

One thing I might do though is run the internal cable housing guides under the bb so the cables don't sit directly on the metal.
