They're scared and angry because we keep destroying their habitat so magpies and humans keep getting squeezed closer and closer together. They're only protecting their young and the swooping season last about 6 weeks - it's just a part of riding down here. There are occasional injuries but this is the first death I've heard of.

FWIW magpies have a truly beautiful singing voice.
