Calfee Dragonfly, Root Beered

Hi all,

Recently I picked up a fairly new Calfee Dragonfly frameset to replace my aging Tetra Pro. It's got an iridescent Root Beer finish which is quite something to behold in person. I tried to show what it looks like when the sun hits it in the pictures, but it's hard to capture it with a still picture.

The build was a pretty much straight swap from the Tetra (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=145147) aside from the cranks and BB. Mostly Dura-Ace 7800 with a smattering of parts, some from various forum members (thanks!). Weight is a hair over 16 lbs with my race wheels, but I had my more subdued "tank wheels" on for the photos.

That's nice, coming from a steel dude… I could ride that. How do you like the ride?

Calfee Dragonfly, Root Beered

Thanks!

It rides a lot like my Tetra, which is to say very comfortable, but it's much more planted and laterally stiff. Carbon has definitely evolved a fair bit in the 15 or so years between the two frames.

Can't say I've ever ridden a plusher road bike than a Calfee, though they no doubt exist.

I love it! Calfee is on my "list", no doubt. So cool and such great reputations...

Gorgeous, esp the scultured 3K lugs! I love and always will keep my Tetra which I just had resprayed by Al Wanta, but that root beer is sweet.

Beautiful!

I think the reason I like it so much is that despite being a carbon frame, it looks more like a steel frame with the round tubes and all; modern, yet slightly retro.

Calfee Dragonfly, Root Beered

Thanks all! The bike is 90% where I want it. A nicer stem (Ritchey WCS perhaps?), black front derailleur clamp, and some carbon aero wheels (for crits and TTs) would do the job nicely. But one thing at a time.

Updated for the season

2015 changes:
  • Thomson Masterpiece 0 setback seatpost
  • Ritchey C260 WCS stem
  • Quarq Riken crankset
  • Reynolds Assault SLG wheelset

As it stands, the bike is right around 16lbs in race trim. I'm likely to go a bit lower on the stem, but it's pretty close to where I want it.

Awesome

Man, that is a beautiful bike. Great job. If I had some spare change around, a Calfee would be on my short list.
