ot cars: 2022 Nissan Maxima
just came across my newsfeed. Is it just me or is this one of the weirdest looking cars on the road? Actually do they sell any of them and why do they keep making them? I know I'm only supposed to say nice things on the forum but come on Nissan. It looks like a tuna boat. I guess the review says it all.

It looks like a Toyota Corolla. I wonder if the shape is to reduce the drag coefficient or increase trunk space.
Front still looks better than the hideous grinning grill of the BMW 7-series. |

Many of the Japanese cars have that weird high rear hip design. Yecch.

Well, I have to reply ...
I own a 2017 Maxima which is the same generation as the 2022 and I loved it at first sight. I am a Nissan guy. All the cars I owned have been Nissans. So you could say I like their design language. In my eyes, the Maxima design stood apart from other cars which at the time were a bit bland. Toyota started tending towards the more aggressive design a year in 2018, about 3 years behind Nissan. The Maxima has never been a big seller unlike the Camry. I spot quite a few of these Maximas around. They seem to be popular enough where I live. The car manufacturers do find their niche. I think there is a new generation around the corner though .. |

On a good note...
The Nissan VQ V6 is a true gem. It's a perennial Wards best engine award winner. Durable, smooth, strong, and refined. |

It looks pretty much like most other 4-door sedans.

Yup. I used to own a 1999 Maxima and the engine is really its highlight.

Far better looking than that monstrosity the Juke with that goofy, high front end. I'd rather drive an Aztec. Well, maybe not but still.

In a time when people are killing to get into a new cars, Nissan (unique among Japanese makes,) is losing market share…so they launch an even uglier version of a car that doesn’t compete in its segment. Brilliant!

I think that it looks good. I will take my share of abuse now.
However it is not in the same league as this:

It's an old design. Influence from the Renault partnership is evident in the unusual styling. If you look at Renaults, Citroen's of the time this came out it's not far off.
Post- Ghosen Nissan is doing some smart design work. Their new lineups look great. |

Pacer was highly influential.
Porsche loved the Pacer so much, the 928 (flagship, 911 replacement) was styled after it. |

Since when did Renault become a factor in Nissan styling? Nissan's of the past were always styled either in their US design center or in Japan.
